Geosciences Paris-Saclay Laboratory (GEOPS)

The Geosciences Paris-Saclay Laboratory (GEOPS) is a joint research unit (UMR 8148) between the CNRS and the University of Paris-Saclay. GEOPS is a member of the OSU Paris-Saclay (OSUPS) and the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) research federation.

Our research teams are mainly made up of geologists, geochemists, sedimentologists, geophysicists and hydrogeologists, who combine their approaches to themes based on a number of societal issues :

1 – Continental hydrogeology, the dynamics of pollution and an understanding of transfers and the influence of alteration processes on (bio-) geochemical cycles subject to anthropogenic and climatic forcing.

2 – Understanding past and present climate dynamics and their impact on Arctic environments

3 – Subsurface-atmosphere-volcanism interactions (Earth and Mars) and the associated risks (volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, etc.)

4 – Resources (geothermal energy, critical metals, etc.), mainly in sedimentary basins, which require detailed characterisation of the subsoil and reconstruction of their geological history if they are to be properly exploited.

GEOPS is strongly focused on geochemical, mineralogical (PANOPLY) and geophysical instrumentation, which is at the heart of many research projects. These analytical approaches are complemented by analogue and digital modelling and digital processing of spatial spectro-imaging data of the planets. Finally, GEOPS researchers are heavily involved in fieldwork campaigns and oceanographic missions.
